Back To Reality

I love holiday weekends.

Especially ones that make you feel like you have done so much in a three and a half day time frame.

This Memorial Day weekend involved some of my all time favorite things, such as:

  • Spending Friday night at the Fair, while being a huge nerd on a carousel and eating red velvet funnel cake20140527_100326[1]

  • Getting to spend a Saturday morning lounging by the pool with a good book and your awesome roommate, and then dancing the night away one last time with your friends before they leave to start their next adventure.

  • Taking crazy photos with friends, while watching hot air balloons and fireworks.

  • And of course, no Memorial Day weekend would be complete without a cookout!

Seriously… do I have to be back in the office now?!

Sometimes you just need to run away

Every now and then I feel like I just cannot take another day of sitting in my windowless office.

This urge has gotten stronger now that the weather has gotten much nicer.

Lucky for me (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) I worked a bunch of extra hours last week and I am not allowed overtime.(#nonprofitlife) BUT I was able to do the next best thing, which is fixing my schedule so I don’t go over my hours.

So I decided to take a day off, randomly, in the start of the week.

Many people are probably thinking “why didn’t you take a Friday off” or “Man it sucks you  just can’t get paid extra”.  But to be honest, I really like having the opportunity to just take a day off when I have the hours. And yes a Friday off is nice. But personally I never end up doing anything on that Friday off besides preparing to go out later that night.

So this week, I took off Tuesday, grabbed a friend (who also had the day off), packed a bag and spent the day hiking and enjoying the weather. Best choice I have made in a while.

Apparently this is my "OMG I'M SO EXCITED TO BE IN NATURE" face. I don't photograph well..

I would like to just live here..

Downside: You will feel SORE the next day while sitting at your desk. All while wishing you were back outside

Style me Savvy: It’s not easy being green

I love St. Patrick’s Day! And not just because it give me an excuse to spend all day drinking whiskey (okay.. that may be PART of the reason I love it. ). But it also brings back the awesome memories of going with my aunt and uncle to Southie (aka the most Irish place in the states*.. ) for the annual parade. I may not be anywhere close to Southie anymore but that is not going to stop me from putting on some green and enjoying a Jameson and Ginger while watching the Huntsville version of a St. Paddy’s day parade. (because a Jameson and ginger at 11 am is perfectly acceptable )
In honor of St Patrick’s Day weekend I have complied some super cute (and cheap!) ways to help you celebrate the day right!

* That may not be an accurate statistic but I’m bias so.. I don’t care. It is now accurate 🙂

Recap: Fall to do list

Fall has come and started to go faster than I thought it would. I feel like the weather just started changing and now it is already time gear up to think about the Holiday season. Which of course means a WHOLE new set of things I want to do before I head home for Christmas and NYE. But I wanted to take a minute to look at the things that I did actually get off the list for fall and of course challenge myself to do way better this time.

  • Pumpkin Carving
  • Favorite Halloween Movie Marathon
  • Make Apple Cider Sangria
  • Hiking- WITHOUT getting lost!
  • Caramel Apple Making Date
  • See a Scary Movie in theaters (Carrie! )
  • Fall Themed Baking Night
  • Find and Explore a “Haunted” Area
  • Go to the Pumpkin Farm
  • Read a Stephen King Novel – This has not happened YET but will by the time I go home. Thanks to my dad being awesome and sending me Misery in the mail and telling me I have to finish it before I see him next.
  • “Nightmare Before Christmas “movie night!

So I got 5 out of 11. Not to bad for a month. Who  knows maybe I can bust out a few more before the launch of the Holiday List on the 14th.

Haunt-tastic Halloween

Over the last few weeks Halloween has pretty much consumed my life. I knew what I wanted to be but I also knew I did not want to spend a ton of money on a generic looking costumes. Which is how I ended up turning

Into this!:

About 5 hours of work and so much glitter went  it to transforming myself into one of my favorite characters TINKERBELL. But I will say all the work was worth it. Between rocking outside  at the HYP event at 3 caves and taking over the karaoke room at Rush this was a great way to spend my all time favorite holiday. Totally  worth the day long hangover.

especially when you have these two crazy ladies to spend it with!

Ps: Shout out to the Huntsville Young Professionals for putting on such an amazing event, I already cannot wait until next year.

Case of the Mondays..

Monday is a rough day. You’re still recovering from the weekend and not fully motivated to do anything at work. And for those of us not Furloughed, we get to sit around and read all the Facebook updated of everyone’s Furlough-cation. But instead of being bummed about not having Columbus Day off or it being Monday in general, I decided today’s post should be about things that are awesome.

  •      Pumpkin Spiced Chai Tea Latte

Move over PSL and make some room for the PSCTL (ok so maybe that does not work as well. But I’m working on it!) Surprisingly there are actually some days in the world when I don’t want coffee, but would still like to enjoy that deliciousness that is Pumpkin Spiced flavoring. So when I discovered there was a CHAI LATTE that allowed me to blend in my favorite fall obsession, I was instantly hooked. I got mine at a local coffee shop here in Huntsville. But I’m sure if you talk to your Starbucks Barista (because we know you’re on a first name bases by now) they may be able to create this for you.

  •     Halloween

Saying you don’t like Halloween is like saying you don’t like puppies or rainbows or happiness in general. It is the only times of the year when it is socially acceptable to play dress up for as many weekends as you want. It is also the only time a year when you can scare the shit out of as many people as you want and no one can get mad at you. Because it’s Halloween and that is how we roll.

  •  Feeling Creative

Going along the lines with Halloween coming up, it means it is also time to start getting a costume ready. This year I threw away the idea of buying a costume that about 15 other girls will probably also be wearing. Because really what fun is that? I decided to put a DIY spin on one of my favorite characters to pretend to be and I must say I’m pretty excited.

  •   Once Upon a Time

Make fun all you want but I’m obsessed with this show and everything about it. And it doesn’t hurt that they are in Neverland this season. Oh and the fact that there is now a Once Upon a Time in WONDERLAND. Please ABC, keep bringing all my favorites on your station.

  • Snap Chat Music Wars

I don’t really know how this started, but I’m so glad it did. Miss J and I have pretty much taken to Snap Chat to send music clips to one another. The only (unspoken) rules are that the songs have to be totally random. Like these are not songs you would hear on the radio ALL the time. And of course that it has to be on the radio and not a CD/IPOD. See Snap Chat is not  just for cheating.

  •    Radio BDC

Let’s be real here, so far the music scene in Bama has not been up to my (musically snobbish) expectations. I have seen some bands play but it is nothing like being home. The radio stations I have found are pretty much oldies, top 40’s, rap, or country. And with that Radio BDC to the rescue! Thanks to the wonders of live streaming music, I can sit at my desk all day and pretend that I am still back in Beantown. And it does not hurt that Adam 12’s voice makes me swoon.

  •   Only 17 days until all the delicious Halloween candy goes to 50% off!
it started out with a kiss...

This pretty much sums it up how I will feel on November 1st

So for those of us who have to work today: Forget having a “Case of the Monday’s” and enjoy the better things in life. And if that does not work, Friday is not THAT far off.

Vista Update: One down 11 to go!

With my first full month as an AmeriCorps Vista coming to an end, it seems fitting to give a little update of the things that have been going on in my world. For those who do not know. I am working for the United Way of Madison County. I work mostly with their Youth Leaders Council and with the Healthy Children’s Initiative, but sometime I get to help out at really cool events.

United Way Kick Off Party:

This was one long and hot Saturday filled with all of the Partners of United Way, some Board Members and a TON of community support. This event was a great way for community members to get out and enjoy the nice weather while learning more about United Way and the programs we help fund. Each of our Partners set up a table with information for community members and activities for the kids. There was a ton of awesome food, a GIANT cake, and the coolest activities. Like a bouncy house (pictured below) that sadly I was not able to play on because I am a “grown up” and had to be working. #lame.

Autism Resource Foundation: Golf Tournament Fundraiser:

I also had the chance this month to help out with the Autism Resource Foundations Gold Fundraiser. This allowed me not only to DRIVE a golf cart but to actually figure out some of the rule of golf. I only stayed for about half of the event but from what I saw it was a huge success and helped to raise a lot of money for the foundation and the work that they do.

“They see me rolling”

Other than work and work events, life is pretty normal. Since it is now officially fall, I am getting SUPER excited for “scary” movies, PSL, Apple Cider and Pumpkin Spiced EVERYTHING, and of course HALLOWEEN. It may not feel like fall outside, but that does not mean it is not that amazing time of the year. And I won’t lie- I’m really enjoying that it is almost October and I can comfortably wear sandals still. 🙂
